Course: 57376 - Intro to Painting

Information: Intro to Painting – Supply List You do not need professional, top-of-the-line materials for this class. We are focusing on learning fundamentals. Start simple. Some items can be found at the dollar store (like canvas and basic tools), but oil paint quality matters more than with acrylic, so I recommend buying student-grade oil paints from an art supply store like Michael’s. Paint Please buy student-grade oil paints Recommended student brand: ● Winsor & Newton Winton Oil Colour (Reliable and beginner-friendly) Basic Colour Set: Small tubes 1.25 Oz (Series 1) ● Titanium White ● Cadmium Red Hue ● French Ultramarine ● Lemon Yellow Hue ● Burnt Umber That’s all you need to mix almost everything. Brushes (Dollar store brushes can work, but natural bristles or firm synthetic brushes from Michael's will hold up better with oil paint.) ● Zen Series 73 Premium Brush Set Surfaces *Dollar Store* ● 4 small canvas boards (8x10 or similar) ● 2 medium to large stretched canvas. Dollar store canvas is fine for learning. Mediums & Solvent *Michael’s* ● Odorless mineral spirits (small bottle) ● Linseed oil (small bottle) We will discuss safe use and ventilation in class. Other Supplies *Michael’s* and/or *Dollar Store* ● Palette (plastic or disposable palette pad) ● Palette knife (1 basic small metal palette knife) *Michael’s* ● 2 small containers with air-tight lids (for solvent and medium) ● Paper towels or rags ● Apron or old clothes (oil paint does not come out) Come to the first class with what you have. We’ll keep it simple and build skills step by step. You do not need the most expensive materials for this class. You can absolutely start with affordable supplies. Many items can be found at the dollar store — especially brushes and canvas. However, paint quality does matter, so I recommend investing a little more in your acrylic paints if possible. If you’d like better-quality options, Michaels carries a wider selection of paints and supplies. Paint ● Acrylic paints (basic colour set) Dollar store paints are usable, but they tend to be watery and less pigmented. If you can, I recommend Liquitex student-grade acrylic paints. They are affordable and much better quality for learning techniques. A basic starter palette: ● Titanium White ● Mars Black ● Primary Red ● Primary Blue ● Primary Yellow Brushes ● Long black-handled brushes from the art section at the dollar store are perfectly fine. ● Medium - Large Brushes, 2”- 3” from the tools section at the dollar store. Come to the first class with what you have. We’ll build skills first — materials can always improve later.
